Real Madrid‘s Copa del Rey season continued with a win against Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Well, that wasn’t expected in many ways was it! We – of course – all hoped for a Real win but having viewed this game against Sevilla as potentially the toughest we could have had a 3-0 win has virtually assured a quarter-final place for Los Blancos.

Zinedine Zidane – for various reasons including the fact we’ve got 21 games in 11 weeks – named a side many might not have expected. However, this was still a strong side with James Rodriguez making the most of his start when he put Real ahead early on with a long range strike.

The lead was doubled before the half hour mark when Raphael Varane headed home. This tie – ahead of the second leg next week – was basically put to bed when James completed his brace with a penalty – after Luka Modric has been fouled – shortly before half time.

Real’s victory not only makes us firm favourites to advance from this last 16 tie but also extended the club record unbeaten run to 38 games – 29 of them won.

Here’s a round up of the Copa del Rey action from the other games played.
